Canaan Mountain and Parunuweap Canyon WSAs Trails

Canaan Mountain and Parunuweap Canyon WSAs Trails Professional Review and Guide

"Canaan Mountain and Parunuweap Canyon Wilderness Study Areas are extensions of the slickrock plateaus and deep canyons of their neighbor, Zion National Park. Canaan Mountain is south of Zion and Parunuweap is east of it.

The Canaan Mountain plateau is high enough to support scattered groves of aspens and ponderosa pines, in addition to the usual piñon-juniper woodlands. South of Canaan Mountain, in Arizona, lies the Cottonwood Point Wilderness. This trail guide includes descriptions of Squirrel Canyon, and Checkboard Mesa Area to Parunweap Canyon."

We began a 2-night/3-day adventure through Parunuweap Canyon by dropping into a fork of the Virgin River from about 5 miles outside of Zion National Park's East entrance on UT-9. We followed the river bed until we reached the canyon. That was our first night's camp. The next day we hiked through the canyon. It was absolutely amazing. We waded through ankle-high to knee-high deep water nearly all day, and had to overcome a few obstacles by lowering our packs down by rope and carefully climbing down. Find the springs along the way, and do not use the river water, it is downstream from cattle ranches and not the cleanest, even though it may appear clean. We camped in the canyon on our second evening along the river's edge. Again... amazing. No words will ever describe just how awesome this experience was. The final day led us out of the canyon and out toward Checkerboard Mesa. We explored Fat Man's Misery for a few minutes, but were running short on time to enjoy all of its glory. We had initially planned to hike out of the canyon, rappel down through Fat Man's and then hike back out. If you have the time, do it. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We had a great group of 5 of us, and the stories we will share from this 3-day hike are endless.
I was hoping to find multiple trails when I viewed this trail map, but found out it was not detailed enough. Thank you anyway, I saw it came up with a lot more trails than I expected.
