Squaw Flats Scenic Byway: Monticello to Needles District, Canyonlands Professional Review and Guide
"A 50-mile desert canyon drive with a variety of geologic, scenic, and historic attractions. The official state byway is limited to a section of highway near the Needles entrance to Canyonlands National Park. The entire corridor of the highway, however, along with the fantastic geological jumble to the west, are deserving of exploration. This drive begins in Monticello, focuses on the very attractive and interesting drive east, and ends with a recommendation for continuing north to Moab.
Special attractions: Newspaper Rock petroglyphs, Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, trail hikes, and rock climbing. Nearby attractions: Abajo Mountains, Abajo Loop Scenic Backway, and Needles and Anticline overlooks. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
