Red Lake Canyon

Red Lake Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"Red Lake Canyon is a remote and dry part of Canyonlands National Park. Because of this very few people visit this area. Be prepared to pack all the water you will need for this trip because there is nowhere to filter once you are in. Along with being dry, the canyon can be very hot in summer. Plan to do this hike between late fall and early spring.

In winter warm spells the snows melt off the trail, but still lingers in shaded places. The snow makes a welcome alternate water source in an emergency. Follow the trail down into Lower Red Lake Canyon. The trail takes you up along the southern rim of the canyon. From here you can look hundreds of feet down to the bottom. After about a mile the trail makes a dramatic drop to the bottom of the gorge and continues down to the Colorado River."
