Secret Spire, Dellenbaugh Tunnel

Secret Spire, Dellenbaugh Tunnel Professional Review and Guide

"Dellenbaugh Tunnel is very short and not at all intimidating to walk through. The tunnel was formed over eons of time by water draining into Spring Canyon. It is unlikely that it could rain hard enough to be dangerous, but I’d stay out of the tunnel during a heavy rain as a precaution. There are other interesting water-carved features around the canyon rim. The hike through the tunnel leads to a hiking trail along the rim of the canyon which is deep with dangerous vertical walls. Children should be supervised.

Spring Canyon provides a beautiful photogenic backdrop for the strange-looking Secret Spire. Many hiking-accessible caves and waterformed features surround the canyon near the spire. You might get lucky, as I did, and catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep on the rock ledges nearby. A few rock challenges require careful tire placement. There is one smooth but steep descent on slickrock and some mildly tippy sections. Skid plates are helpful but not absolutely necessary. Suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles. Route-finding is a little confusing in a couple of places but, due to the shortness of the routes, you can’t get too far off course."

The secret spire trail is fun and the slickrock portion is pretty easy, with a great view at the spire. The trail to Dellenbaugh tunnel is considerably more difficult with many slickrock ascents and descents, and a sand wash to run through. This trail is probably not suitable for many stock SUVs, but I made it to within 1/8 mile of the end of trail in my Dodge Durango with 2" lift. Reccomend going on the buddy system as getting stuck in this remote area could be bad. I saw nobody else on these trails, but it was a tuesday.
