Polar Mesa Trail

Polar Mesa Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Polar Mesa is a spur trail off Castleton-Gateway Road. The majority of the road surface is roughly graded dirt; the final part traversing Polar Mesa is rockier and less maintained. It is suitable for a high-clearance vehicle in dry weather, but it should not be attempted in wet weather or immediately following a rainstorm, as the earliest sections turn treacherous and greasy.

Old uranium mining camp ruins on Polar Mesa; Spectacular views over Fisher Valley and Dolores River valley. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs."
