Onion Creek - Kokopelli

Onion Creek - Kokopelli Professional Review and Guide

"This 22-mile out-and-back (11 miles each way) is memorable for its nearly two dozen stream crossings, which may occasionally require first gear to pull out of. Begin riding up-canyon on a well-graded, two-wheel-drive surface, immediately crossing Onion Creek and picking up the first of a great deal of red dirt your wet tires will meet. The creek crossings are double the fun on the way out. The route serves up a good aerobic workout but is technically easy, with its good gravel- and sand-surfaced roads.

Down low you’ll be surrounded by distinctive towers and rimrocks, a geologic puzzle of purplish and dark red Cutler and Moenkopi sediments. These soon give way—after you cross a high bridge spanning a pinched canyon narrows—to desert slopes that may lead you to believe you’ve left Utah for Arizona. Still higher up, things turn greener as you enter Fisher Valley, a broad, pleasing basin of ranch lands embraced by mountains and mesas. General location: 23 miles northeast of Moab."
