Monitor and Merrimac Buttes and Termination Towers

Monitor and Merrimac Buttes and Termination Towers Professional Review and Guide

"This ride begins in sand, drops into the sometimes torn up Mill Canyon slot and then rolls over hills of sand and ledgy bedrock. Monitor and Merrimac buttes stand at the far edge of Courthouse Pasture in the west. Your approach to the buttes is through deep sand in the form of rolling hills--effectively, they are dunes. On the other side of the buttes is steep, exciting slickrock.

It's recommended that you ride with a guide the first time you ride in the Monitor and Merrimac and Courthouse Pasture area due to fragile desert flora and some particularly interesting, exposed, and dangerous freeform slickrock areas that are far more interesting and safe with some one who knows the area. It is a long way from any kind of help should something happen out here. Trail Surface: 4WD doubletrack, slickrock, and sparse singletrack. Shale maintained county road, 4WD track through a wash bottom over sand, loose rock, hardpack, bedrock, and more deep sand. Flashes of singletrack, then Entrada and Navajo formation slickrock."

As a good introduction to sickrock, there is a 7 mile loop that is physicaly easy and technicaly moderate. About 1/3 is on slickrock, a few very short sections of sand and the rest is doubletrack. The ride is scenic, and fun.
