Lathrop Canyonlands National Park

Lathrop: Canyonlands National Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A long day hike or overnighter across Island in the Sky plateau, down to White Rim Road, and on to the Colorado River. The Lathrop Trail is significantly different from the other trails that leave Island in the Sky for White Rim Road. The trail goes 2.5 miles on top of the mesa before it heads down toward the White Rim, and the climb back up is more gradual than the Wilhite, Gooseberry, and Murphy Trails.

The hike starts out through flat grassland of peppergrass and ricegrass (both native species) with meadowlarks singing in the background and not even a juniper to break up the grassy sea. After a mile you leave the sea of grass and head off, mostly over slickrock with a few stretches of loose sand, dropping gradually in elevation until you reach the canyon rim."

I've hiked this trail to the canyon rim before and found this a very enjoyable day hike. The trail is well marked to the rim of the canyon is well marked. The views of the Colorado River are just outstanding and the canyon rim is a great place for lunch. We did not have enough time to hike down to the Colorado, but with an earlier start we could have completed this hike in a day.
