Haystack Mountain

Haystack Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"Haystack Mountain is one of the easiest major peaks in the La Sal Mountains to summit and then ski or snowboard. This lower-elevation peak has mellow ascent slopes and straightforward access, which makes it a good tour for intermediate backcountry skiers and splitboarders looking to bag a desert summit without getting all gnarly. Spring is an ideal time for a tour on Haystack, as south- and east-facing aspects bathe in corn-creating sunlight, and the north bowl stays cold, keeping snow well into late spring. The ascent route does cross into major avalanche terrain, so a stable snowpack is key to a successful tour. You may also need an ice ax and crampons on spring mornings when the snow is hard, especially on one particularly steep section below
the summit ridge. Parking is in the large, plowed lot with bathrooms and informational signs. The route starts on the northeast side of the lot."
