Gold Bar Rim

Gold Bar Rim Professional Review and Guide

"This is the deep end of the pool, the brink of mountain biking, the pinnacle of the sport, a ride only fit for the strong, smart and skilled--a place where others can qualify for the Darwin Awards. The surface is the most varied possible. The only missing ingredients are mud and water crossings. There are ledges, deep sand, loose rock, hardpack, slickrock, gigantic rock rubble, and every combination of these you can imagine.

This ride is extremely dangerous! Despite the inherent danger of the exposed cliff, the Portal Trail is the emergency hatch to and from Poison Spider Mesa and the Gold Bar Rim in case of a storm or accident. Two deaths almost closed the trail in 1998. If we are to believe the BLM, one more is all it is going to take. This is the most challenging, beautiful, and awe inspiring mountain bike ride on earth. Treat it like it's sacred. Respect it. Love it. Care for it. Most of all, fear it."

The coolest ride in Moab if you like technical ups and downs. Wanna launch? You got it. Trial finding used to be really tough, but it is much better marked now. My friends call it the Blue Dot Trail. Have only been down Portal, but descending on Poison Spider would be a nice change. It is a commitment and if you are in shape ride the whole loop. coming down portal it was about 22 miles.
You can cough up a lung on this one. Seem steep climbs and great decents. Awesome views. This is a must do if your in good shape and a good rider. Bring lots o fluids. Its a good one to do if you start w/ gemini bridges, then do Gold bar to the portal trail. good 6 hour ride or so. you will need have a car to take back to get the one you dropped off at gemini. course you could ride it back if your really sick
I underestimated this ride by the seemingly short distance on the map. After doing the Gemini Bridges ride, I suggested my group take the Gold Bar to the dangerous Poison Spider Portal. Gold Bar Rim kicked our butts. It took so long to get to the Portal, that we rode by it in the dark. About to give up, and gathering our survival supplies for a cold exposed night in the desert, we decided to backtrack to a spot where we could see the lights of Moab over the rim, and bam! we spotted our portal. We did the treacherous descent at 10 PM without lights (but the night sky partially lit the way. My group hated my guts. I can't wait to do it again. If you do this trail, bring a helmet and some survival crap just in case.
