Balanced Rock Arches National Park

Balanced Rock: Arches National Park Professional Review and Guide

"A very easy walk to the base of a fragile, picturesque rock formation. This is a short hike, perfect for travelers who would like to stretch their legs without working up a big sweat. You can see Balanced Rock and read about it on an interpretive display at the parking area, but it’s more impressive up close. The trail makes a short loop around Balanced Rock and returns to the parking area."

"You’ll see Balanced Rock in the distance and may even be tempted to drive right by as you head down the road in search of the more spectacular arches in the park. But this red-rock monolith is certainly worth a short stop, if for no other reason than to stretch your legs.

In return you’ll be rewarded with an up-close 360-degree view of this natural wonder that seems to defy gravity. The short walk gives you a chance to become familiar with the natural forces that created the arches farther down the road."

"This short hike encircles Balanced Rock, one of Arches Park’s most precarious rock features. Its first section accommodates wheelchair users. The easy 0.3-mile Balanced Rock Trail encircles Balanced Rock just off the park road west of The Windows section of Arches National Park.

The concrete first section of the trail is wheelchair accessible. The rest of the trail is a doubletrack dirt and slickrock path that is lined with boulders. Start the hike at the trailhead on the northeast side of the parking area."

Nothing spectacular here, but a nice little leg stretcher.

A leg stretcher from the car journey into the Park. Mundane compared to the other sights.

This trail is only worth hiking if you don't plan on doing ANY other trails in the park. It gives you a great idea of Arches hiking, with groomed trail turning into slickrock turning into sand and back again. It does not, however, give the terrific views so commonly found throughout the park, or lead to any hidden treasures. In fact, the best, more dramatic view of Balanced Rock itself comes from the approach trail, though of course it's fascinating from all angles. I would suggest this trail to those travelers who otherwise wouldn't get out of the car, due to its length, but not to people eager to hike the park.
