Todie Canyon to Grand Gulch

Todie Canyon to Grand Gulch Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Todie Canyon, a short precipitous gorge, offers the shortest and most challenging route into upper Grand Gulch. Although most of the route is straightforward, a very steep scramble and slickrock friction descent off the rim adds excitement to the route. Backpackers are advised to carry a rope to lower packs off the rim.

The trail begins as a closed road behind the trailhead register and information signboard, leading west above the rim of Todie Canyon, narrowing to a singletrack after 175 yards. Views soon open up into the headwaters draw of Todie Canyon to the north, its gorge embraced by low walls of Cedar Mesa slickrock."

We hiked up Todie from Grand Gulch. The little seen ruins in Todie are great but nearly inaccessible. There is one high on the north wall near where the north and south Todie canyons meet. The better one is even further (from Grand Gulch) up the south canyon very high on the north wall. Even in one of the driest times of the driest years, we found water in a spring about .25 miles up Todie from Grand. BRING A FILTER - the water is real bad in dry times and treating is insufficient. A great campsite on soft sand is located very near the mouth of Todie at Grand Gulch. We were told there were bears in the area so we hung our food. Bring USGS maps as the Trails Illustrated one is better for overview only.
