Bluff Scenic Byway Bluff to Monument Valley

Bluff Scenic Byway: Bluff to Monument Valley Professional Review and Guide

"A 45-mile drive through the desert grandeur of southern San Juan County and the Navajo Indian Reservation, highlighted by views of desert spires and mesas. This is beauty on a grand scale. While the landscapes to the north and east are characterized by dramatic ancient bucklings of the earth and by intricate, maze-like canyons carved by the persistent action of rushing waters, the country encountered on this drive is more spacious and more serene in its magnificence. Rather than narrow, chaotic canyons and steep, confining barrier reefs, the road traverses land that is broad, open, and windswept.

It is hot at the height of summer in this corner of the state. Otherwise, no real seasonal distinctions can be made, and driving poses no impediments for any sort of vehicle. Special attractions: Mexican Hat Rock, views of Monument Valley, Navajo crafts and culture, and float trips on the San Juan River. Nearby attractions: Hovenweep National Monument, Four Corners, Valley of the Gods, Muley Point, and Goosenecks. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."

We drove from Monument Valley to Bluff (so had a little trouble reading the route backwards) but it worked well! Monument valley was great. We had a SUV and managed the 17 mile trip easily and with air con (you don't get that on the jeep tours). The 17 mile Valley of the Gods was well worth the trip and the suggested detour up the very steep road to the north was fantastic if not a little scary! We stayed in Bluff which was very quiet but met all our needs. We stayed at Desert Rose Inn, had dinner at Cottonwood Inn and breakfast at Twin Peaks Cafe..all very good. As scenic drives go, this was well worth the trip and the guide was invaluable.
