Elk Park

Elk Park Professional Review and Guide

"The grandeur of the 100-mile-long Uinta Mountains is unfurled in its midsection where Kings Peak, Utah’s tallest at 13,528 feet, and attendant summits boldly display the erosional effects of glaciation. Massive cirques have been stamped from the range’s hardened quartzite core as cleanly as a giant’s heel depresses damp sand. Mile-long ridges embrace the rock amphitheaters and direct countless streams from these highlands to the basins below.

The Elk Park loop takes you across the Uinta’s eastern slope. From the Ute Mountain Lookout, the first of Utah’s fire detection towers built in 1935 and on the National Register of Historic Places, you can survey the land and study its topography. Then, you’ll follow trails along crystalline streams and across breezy meadows cuddled by dense timber. The loop begins on well-traveled doubletracks to the Ute Mountain Lookout. Thereafter, the route follows a short stretch of singletrack followed by ATV trails all the way around."
