Moquith Mountains Trail

Moquith Mountains Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The dramatic pinkish red dunes of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park are a major feature on this trail. Wind funnels through the Moccasin and Moquith Mountains, carrying particles of pink sand from the region's Navajo sandstone; as the air pressure drops, the grains fall to form the dunes. The dunes were one of the reasons that Kanab was once known as the most inaccessible town in the United States, and they have been the setting for their share of movies: Arabian Nights was filmed here in 1942, Mackenna’s Gold in 1969, and One Little Indian in 1973. A conservation area within the dunes protects the coral pink beetle in its only known habitat.

Special Attractions: Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park; Indian Canyon Pictographs Trail; Fun, sandy trail with great views into Water Canyon. High-clearance 4WDs are recommended, though most stock SUVs are acceptable. Expect a rough road surface with rocks larger than 6 inches, but there will be a reasonable driving line available. Patches of mud are possible but can be readily negotiated; sand may be deep and require lower tire pressures. There may be stream crossings up to 12 inches deep, substantial sections of single-lane shelf road, moderate grades, and sections of moderately loose road surface."
