Three Divide Lakes

Three Divide Lakes Professional Review and Guide

"A day hike or overnighter to beautiful terrain in the Uinta Mountains. There are numerous lakes along the entire hike, with alpine scenery and good fishing. The western Uinta Mountains, from Kamas east to Bald Mountain, offer spectacular high lake country and a family of peaks at more than 10,000 feet.

This is the Lakes Roadless Area, headwater country of the Provo and Weber Rivers. The Three Divide Lakes are about 3 miles from the trailhead and only about 400 feet higher in elevation, so the hike is relatively easy. These beautiful alpine lakes sit among a cluster of lakes at just over 10,400 feet. The area is bordered by the Notch Mountain peaks to the north (11,263 feet is the tallest) and by boulder-strewn Mount Watson (11,521 feet) to the southwest."

This is basically the same hike as the Clyde Lake hike as they are right next to each other. Nice overnight backpack trip. Lots of beautifuls scenery. The trail past Wall Lake is a much more gradual climb with a better trail of moderate intensity than the trail past Watson and Cliff Lakes. With the latter, you need to pay attention to the map and what side of the lake the trail runs on because the trail is faint at times and there are other faint trails that can lead you astray. There are a number of dead falls and the the trail is quite rough and rocky. I would consider it a strenuous trail similar to a lot of the trails in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. The fishing in the lakes is quite good but the fish are quite small and make sure to use a small hook as they strike a small fly a lot more often than a larger one.
