Ibantik Lake

Ibantik Lake Professional Review and Guide

"The trail goes right over Notch Pass. Even if you don’t visit Ibantik Lake, you should hike to the top of Notch Pass and gaze into the deep turquoise depths of Lovenia Lake directly below. Absolutely gorgeous! Words cannot describe its beauty. Pictures cannot depict its depth, nor the feeling you get at the top of a cliff looking down. The view is a must for hikers searching for awesome alpine scenery.

The trail from Crystal Lake trailhead goes north 1.1 mile to Wall Lake. There is a trail junction here with the trail coming from Trial Lake. Continue to the left (north) 1.6 miles past Lovenia Lake on the west side of the trail to the notch in Notch Mountain. Ibantik Lake is 0.6 mile northeast of the Notch. Campsites exist at Lovenia Lake, but there are better ones and fewer people at Ibantik. There is more room for the crowds to disperse once you reach Ibantik Lake."

The trail itself is awesome, but this guide describes the trail incorrectly. It describes going past Lovenia Lake 1.6 miles to the notch in Notch Mountain. Lovenia Lake isn't reached until after you go through the notch. I felt the guide was also too brief in it's description. It would have helped to have had a landmark pointed out along the way to the notch, such as Hope Lake with it's easily recognizable rock wall, so you know roughly where you're at, as most of the lakes in this area are unmarked. The hike itself is fairly easy until you hit the switchbacks going up Notch Mountain and start gaining elevation. The scenery is beautiful and you get to see plenty of lakes along the way, so it's definitely worth doing. We went on the 4th of July and there was still snow along the trail and a large cap of snow on the notch that we had to hike through, so I would say that this hike is probably best to take in the peak of summer.
