Pioneer Campground Professional Review and Guide
"The Blacksmith Fork is locally renowned as a trout stream. It is designated as a Blue Ribbon Fishery, a distinction awarded by the US government to rivers and streams with excellent water quality and quantity, accessibility to anglers, optimal environmental conditions for sustaining a healthy fish population, the ability to accommodate fishing crowds without sacrificing the quality of the recreational experience, and the presence of certain fish species. The 16-mile stretch from the first impoundment excels in each of these criteria, and at Pioneer you’re right in the thick of things.
The river is known for its large, lumbering turns and gentle riffles. Mostly brown trout swim these waters, so nymphing and streamers seem to be most productive. Bait fishing is allowed, so even the most impatient 6-year-old can have a shot at a brown or even the occasional cutthroat or mountain whitefish. Note that the river passes through some stretches of private land—river access is limited here, but such areas are generally well signed."
