Lake Country Trail

Lake Country Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Two miles west of Trial Lake, on the western side of the Uinta Mountains, lies a high alpine bench that the Forest Service is fond of calling Lake Country. The bench lies at the headwaters of the Weber River drainage (to the north) and the Provo River Drainage (to the south) and there are dozens of lakes in the area. Needless to say it is a favorite area for backcountry anglers, and you are likely to see many fishermen on this hike.

Access into Lake Country is on the Smith Morehouse Trail which begins at the Crystal Lake Trailhead. The route described below is an easy day hike that passes by three large lakes and a half-dozen smaller ones. For more adventurous backpackers interested in getting off the "beaten path" there are also several interesting off-trail lakes within a mile of the trail."

Good trail experience. Nothing radical, easy to find and navigate, very scenic. To Long Lake and back is easy. On to Island and back via the Duck Lake loop is worth while. A short, easy, and scenic hike is found at the same trailhead to Wall Lake (the Forest Service map shows its location incorrectly). Summer weekends can find lots of people and a crowded trailhead.

This was a great hike. I hiked it once with my organization (Utah Rivers Council) and I went up a second time with my girlfriend. Great scenary and wildlife. Very pristine and natural except Margerie Lake, the damn is awful looking, stay on the east side of the Lake. The map and info from trails.com was right on and very helpful. I will definately use it again. My only suggestion is to take the heber exit off I-80, turn left at center of Kamas, and right on 150(Mirror Lake Highway). Its a bit shorter of a drive coming from Salt Lake
