Garfield County - Mt Ellen

Garfield County - Mt. Ellen Professional Review and Guide

"An aura of mystery permeates the Henry Mountains, the last mountain range in the 48 contiguous states to be named. Prospectors once searched for a cursed lost Spanish gold mine, many losing their health, minds, and lives in the process. The Eagle City ghost town, symbolizing the dashed dreams of 1890 gold miners, sits at the base of the mountain, lost and abandoned.

Butch Cassidy and his gang of outlaws hid in this wild, roadless country known as Robber’s Roost at the turn of the century. And one of the nation’s only free-roaming buffalo herds has wandered the range since 1941, when 18 head were transplanted from Yellowstone National Park. At the top of the range sits 11,522-foot Mt. Ellen, the tallest peak in Garfield County. The boulder-strewn summit—listed in some literature as being 11,615 feet high—sits on the north end of the desert range."
