Boulder Mountain Highway

Boulder Mountain Highway Professional Review and Guide

"A 30-mile paved highway that ascends and descends Boulder Mountain, providing magnificent views into Capitol Reef National Park and beyond. The Boulder Mountain Highway climbs rapidly out of desert slickrock country and ascends 2,500 feet along the side of Boulder Mountain before winding back down. Views into the geologic splendors of southern Utah are magnificent. The two-lane road is paved, and it has two paved overlooks and frequent scenic turnouts. Traffic is light and the highway well-maintained. Lower speeds are recommended because of the many curves and occasional steep grades. The byway travels along some very steep drop-offs that require additional caution.

Scenery is exceptional, traveling in either direction, particularly if you are traveling in the late afternoon when the long rays of the sun enliven the desert’s deep hues. Special attractions: Slickrock canyons, subalpine meadows, far-reaching views east over the Waterpocket Fold and San Rafael Swell, cooler elevations, colorful autumn foliage. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
