Thousand Lake Mountain Drive

Thousand Lake Mountain Drive Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"There are a few small lakes on Thousand Lake Mountain, but it’s possible that someone mistook it for the Aquarius Plateau and Boulder Mountain to the south, where there are indeed many lakes. This tour plunges 3,000 feet from forested Thousand Lake Mountain into the high desert of Upper Cathedral Valley and the Waterpocket Fold and then ascends back up the mountain. It’s best in late spring or early summer, and fall.

At a Y junction at mile 4.5 [N38°29.866' W111°27.508'], at Heart Lake, bear right toward Cathedral Valley. The road to the left, 020, will be your return route. Here you’re at about 9,500 feet. At mile 5 [N38°29.690' W111°27.620'] turn left onto road 022 and soon you will begin the descent to Cathedral Valley. Note the contrast of aspen forest in the foreground and the great expanse of restless desert rolling into the distance. At mile 5.5 pass road 211 on the left. The tour enters the park at mile 10.8, and in another mile you will reach Hartnet Junction [N38°28.168' W111°21.825']."
