Skyline Drive - Miller Flat Loop

Skyline Drive - Miller Flat Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This 34-mile loop is aerobically exhausting but technically easy, except for a stretch of rocky four-wheel-drive track dropping off the Wasatch Plateau. Other riding surfaces include pavement, graded gravel, and compacted sediment that’s typically smooth, with a high cruisability quotient (although occasional mud holes are likely). You’ll begin by following 12 miles of Skyline Drive, a treasure of a track topping the Wasatch Plateau that offers a great opportunity for a multiday bike-packing trip. At the north end, it leaves Highway 6 west of Soldier Summit and ascends Clear Creek Ridge to the Wasatch Plateau, following it for mile after undulating mile before dropping to I-70 at a point east of Salina. Because of the high elevation, the and, in fact, the two can collide.

Up, down, up, and down you will go—if the season is right—through a wonderful ground cover of lupine, Indian paintbrush, and other brilliantly hued wildflowers. Stretching away in the distance is a repetition of west-trending ridges repeatedly cut by deep, aspen-choked drainages; to the east, you’ll skirt open tundra holding thick pockets of fir. Just be sure to do it in a counterclockwise direction. General location: 14 miles east of Fairview."
