Smoky Mountain Road Professional Review and Guide
"The Smoky Mountain Road is the longest of the backcountry byways that cross through the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. For the most part it crosses the Kaiparowits Plateau, providing good views of diverse scenery. Near Big Water, the trail runs across the steep Kelly Grade, an exciting drive of narrow switchbacks.
Special Attractions: Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area; The switchbacks of Kelly Grade; Underground smoldering coal deposits; Long trail with varied scenery over the Kaiparowits Plateau. High-clearance vehicles are preferred, but not necessary. This trail is dirt roads, but may have rocks, grades, water crossings, or ruts that make clearance a concern in a normal passenger vehicle. The trail is fairly wide, so that passing is possible at almost any point along the trail. Mud is not a concern under normal weather conditions."
