Neon Canyon

Neon Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"This long day hike, or short overnighter, takes you to one of the most spectacular locations in the Escalante region—the Golden Cathedral of Neon Canyon. Above the Cathedral an exceptionally narrow slot once flowed through two deep potholes and over a very high dryfall.

Over time the water eroded out underneath the potholes, creating cylindrical shafts through the slickrock. During flash floods the water now routes through the first pothole and drops 60 feet into a large pool below. The adventurous can enjoy a canyoneering adventure through the slot and pothole—a short but technical section for expert canyoneers only."

This was a pretty nice hike. We did this on day 3 of a 4 day trip to the region. The Golden Cathedral is well worth it. We didn't do the rappell, but if you're game, it looks like it would be a blast. Definitely watch out for the Poison Ivy, it's everywhere. The rest of the hike is fair. We came in from the Egypt trailhead which is pretty strenuous, as it is probably at least 1000 foot elevation drop. Next time, I think I'm gonna try coming up from Early Weed Bench. Note, there are some great campsites along the Escalante near the mouth of the canyon.
