Journey Through Time Challenge Professional Review and Guide
"The Journey Through Time Challenge is a 58.1-mile out-and-back ride over rolling terrain with several steep climbs and descents. The ride travels SR 12, an All- American Highway (i.e., very scenic) between Escalante and Boulder in the Grand Staircase-Escaante National Monument. Bike handling skills are a must in negotiating the winding descents, and stamina is needed to surmount the climbs. The elevation ranges from 5,820 feet in Escalante, to 5,204 feet at the Escalante River crossing, to 6,775 feet to the southwest of Boulder. The route is entirely on SR 12, except for a turnaround loop along city of Boulder streets.
Start the ride at the Escalante Ranger District office located on SR 12 on the western edge of Escalante. The office was established in 2003 and represents several agencies (BLM, USDA Forest Service, National Parks Service). Walk your bicycle to the highway (unpaved parking lot) and begin the ride. Head east on SR 12, passing through Escalante. This would be a good time to pick up provisions. Leave Escalante at mile 2.0, on a slight uphill. False flats and rolling terrain begin shortly thereafter."
