Reds Canyon Loop Professional Reviews and Guides
"The San Rafael Swell’s remarkable scenic diversity and mining nostalgia are amplified on the Reds Canyon loop. Inasmuch as this is one of the most remote corners in the Swell, solitude abounds and rings with deafening silence. If you feel the need to escape the confines of urbanism, Reds Canyon fits the bill. The route commences with many miles of cruising across Sinbad Country’s grass-carpeted, high desert plains from where you can view distant mountains and plateaus. Thereafter you drop into the heart of the western San Rafael Swell and follow an 800-foot deep canyon guarded by twin towers of stone and drenched with desert varnish—nature’s bar coding. Prospectors poked and prodded the sedimentary rocks in search of radioactive ore many decades ago. Today, their efforts exist as ghostly reminders of boom days long since past. The route culminates with a steep but not-too-painful climb out of the canyon back to the flats above. Tread: Dirt and sand doubletracks throughout that may be suitable for passenger cars when dry but are rough locally."
