Zion Narrows Trail

Zion Narrows Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is probably the best known hike in Utah. The watery North Fork Virgin River Canyon offers a welcome respite from Southern Utah’s hot summer weather, and the scenery within the canyon is truly spectacular. There are only about three months of the year, however, when conditions are suitable for the hike, and a fair amount of planning is required for a successful trip. The most important consideration is the weather. Flash floods are a constant danger in narrow desert canyons like the Zion Narrows, and you shouldn’t begin the narrows hike unless the forecast is good.

The camp sites are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis beginning at 3:00 p.m. each day, so if you want to be assured of getting an overnight permit you should be at the Visitor Center by at least 1:00 p.m. the day before your hike. The sites are assigned according to your group size. Most of the sites will accommodate 4 to 6 people, but only one site is large enough for the maximum group size of 12 people. In addition to the overnight permits, the Park Service also hands out up to 80 permits each afternoon for day hikes through the narrows."

One of a kind hike - perfect for a hot sunny day...once you pass the "rainy day at the mall" crowds at the bottom entrace, your start to notice the beauty and almost spookyness of the canyon around you....made it about 3 miles upstream and back in under 3 hours, however, proper shoes and hiking poles are a must...felt sorry for those trying to find their ways in sandles or even barefotted.

This has to be one of the most amazing hikes I have every been on. I would highly recommend that you bring a walking stick, they rent them in town for 5-10 bucks and proper shoes....tennis shoes worked great.

Beautiful views, but the water is cold, make sure you to rent (or bring your own) gear to keep you warm/dry.

This was the third time I did this ultimate hike - and 46 year old knees wonder if I'll ever do the full 17 miles in one day again. It is UNSURPASSED as a hike (A rapidly increasing stream cutting through ever deepening canyons that get more and more primeval) but DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE this! It can be an ordeal if you are psychologically unprepared for the cold, wet, and dark bowels-of0the-earth depths of this wonderful place in Fall. Consider if you are ready, don't dawdle too much, and be ready to be exhausted but happy.

I have to give Utahs most famous trail a 5 star. Not much elevation change, but hiking through a narrow INCREDIBLY beautiful colorful canyon makes up for it. It is difficult because your wading through water at times that goes over your head. Make sure you wear comfortable strap on sandles or really good water stocks. This can be a day or night hike, but it really depends on the weather because if it rains there could be flash flood issues. Overall a very beautiful, unique hike that is a must for anyone going near St George and southern UT.
