Lower Black Box

Lower Black Box Professional Review and Guide

"A wet day hike or overnighter through the Lower Black Box of the San Rafael River, located within the Mexican Mountain Wilderness Study Area. The Lower Black Box of the San Rafael River provides one of the more interesting river hikes in the state. The San Rafael area has not received the attention other rivers have.

Therefore, chances are you won’t be running into many other hikers. The trip involves about a 2.3-mile hike down to the river, another 2.5 miles along the rim on the east side of the river, and then a 4-mile hike/wade through the Lower Black Box. The entire trip can be done in a day, or you can backpack to the river and camp near Sulphur Spring."
