Utah Highway 12 Scenic Byway Section 1 - Red Canyon to Escalante

Utah Highway 12 Scenic Byway: Section 1 - Red Canyon to Escalante Professional Review and Guide

"A 62-mile high plateau and canyon drive, featuring the redrock country of the Paunsaugunt Plateau and the high desert canyonlands south of the Aquarius Plateau. The most scenic highway in a state well known for its scenic drives, the highway here is arguably the most attractive drive in the nation, and certainly one of the most diverse. From Red Canyon in the west to its eastern terminus at Utah Highway 24, just west of the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park, it traverses a little more than 120 miles of ruggedly beautiful landscape.

The constant succession of towering redrock, remote slickrock canyons, heavily-forested alpine mountains, and rustic rural villages contribute to the uniqueness and diversity of the drive. Special attractions: Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park, Kodachrome Basin State Park, and Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. Nearby attractions: Sevier River Valley, East Fork of the Sevier Scenic Backway, Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Backway (Grosvenor Arch), Smokey Mountain Scenic Backway, and Escalante backcountry drives and hikes. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
