Twisted Forest Professional Review and Guide
"The name Twisted Forest evokes childhood fairy tales of a foreboding woodland where country folk spend eternity under villainous spells. This Twisted Forest, on the contrary, is open, sunny, brightly colored, and welcomes curious travelers. Twisted it is, however, for these hillsides harbor large communities of bristlecone pines, one of the earth’s oldest living organisms.
These tenacious conifers have been known to live for more than 2,000 years. With tangled roots that sprawl across the crumbly limestone, contorted limbs curled into spirals, and sprouts of pine garlands at the tips of branches, they appear feeble and arthritic. But they are sturdy and stoic. Tread: 5 miles of light duty dirt roads. The spur to High Mountain is on mostly tame doubletrack."
