Upper Gulch

Upper Gulch Professional Review and Guide

"The trail follows the creek for up to 10 miles through a wide and remote sandstone canyon. Although this canyon lacks the spectacular narrows of the other Escalante-area canyons, the relative solitude, sculpted sandstone streambed, and deepening cliff walls make the hike a relaxing foray.

At first, a definite trail hugs the east bank of the stream through relatively flat terrain. Cottonwoods line the stream course, with large sagebrush on the benches. About 0.75 mile from the trailhead, Steep Creek breaks off to the left (northwest). Trails continue up both canyons. Stay to the right to follow the Gulch.

Another 0.25 mile, and a short slot enters from the left. Exploring this slot takes only a few minutes, as it ends after only 150 feet. Farther upstream it’s necessary to bypass a small falls. Climb up and around the falls."
