North Escalante Canyons/The Gulch ISA, Steep Creek WSA, and Escalante Canyon Tract ISA Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"North Escalante Canyons is a proposed wilderness that encompasses several tributary canyons on the north side of the Escalante River. The Gulch, Horse Canyon, Little Death Hollow, Wolverine Canyon, and Escalante Canyon are all excellent hiking routes. Of these, Little Death Hollow and Wolverine are true slot canyons for short distances. Most of the other canyon routes can vary from easy strolls to strenuous hikes depending mainly on distance.

When hiking routes include canyon floors, they are not considered “trails” because there’s no way to maintain or mark a route that is altered and swept clean by seasonal flash flooding. There are many trailheads and almost no “trails.” Hikes that extend into the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area are popular. This trail guide includes descriptions of The Gulch, Upper Section, and Loop Hike, Shuttle Day Hike, or Backpack The Horse and Wolverine Canyons."

Our group of four hiked down Wolverine Canyon to Horse Canyon, then a mile further south to an old miner's cabin with a limited spring nearby. It was an overnight backpack of 6.5 miles each way. The scenery was fantastic! Wolverine narrows to a slot canyon part way through. We were hiking over rocks and petrified wood for much of the time, so progress was somewhat slow, but there were no major obstacles. Highly recommended as an overnight backpack. If more time is available, you can do an 8 mile round trip from the camp in Horse Canyon down to the Escalante River for a swim.
