Moqui Canyon

Moqui Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"Perhaps the most spectacular aspect of Moqui Canyon is the canyon itself. This huge tributary of Glen Canyon features dramatic red-rock scenery strikingly similar to that found at Canyon de Chelly in northern Arizona. However, unlike the large cliff dwellings at the celebrated national monument to the south, any archaeological sites you find in Moqui Canyon are more of a bonus to your hiking experience than the main attraction.

One of the best bonuses I could find in Moqui Canyon was a petroglyph site located inside a long, shallow alcove that once held an Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwelling. The ruins have all but disappeared, but much of the former occupants’ artwork can still be seen on the surrounding rocks. Pictures of animals dominate the site, including one very well-preserved bighorn sheep. You’ll also find a few images of people, plus a multitude of squiggly lines that defy interpretation."
