The Beechwoods Trail is located, appropriately, in the Big Thicket National Preserve’s Beech Creek Unit where Beech Creek and Little Beech Creek intersect. It offers a shady stroll through a mature hardwood forest with a chance to see native blooming orchids. The words “beech” and “book” are both derivatives from similar Anglo-Saxon words which may be attributable to the fact that our Teutonic ancestors used beech wood as a writing surface. The American beech tree is prevalent along the trail, providing a major prong to the beechmagnolia-loblolly triumvirate that comprises this mature hardwood forest.
