Heron Flats Loop

Heron Flats Loop Professional Review and Guide

"The brochure on the counter at the Claude F. Lard Visitor Center at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge said it all: “Welcome! Whooping Crane Stronghold!” Of course, I had to ask what that meant. The volunteer on duty was very cordial and chuckled, “You’re not from here, are you?” I knew of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and that it was a haven for birds, but had no idea how important this facility was.

Four hundred species of birds, beautiful views of wetlands and San Antonio Bay, and home to the endangered whooping crane, that’s what you’ll find at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, and the perfect trail to take it all in is the Heron Flats Loop. This 1.4-mile loop is the longest in the park and gives you a good overview of what makes Aransas so special."

"Heron Flats, as well as much of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, consists of oyster-shell ridges that have been created by storm surges and strong winds. The depressions between these ridges are ideal for capturing rain, thus creating freshwater sloughs and ponds.

The combination of these freshwater sloughs and the saltwater tidal marshes that lie just beyond these oyster shell levees provides an astonishingly rich ecosystem of fresh, brackish, and saltwater environments. One form of wildlife taking refuge here is the alligator, and a hike on the Heron Flats Trail is an excellent opportunity to see these creatures in their natural habitat."
