Heron Flats Loop Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The brochure on the counter at the Claude F. Lard Visitor Center at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge said it all: “Welcome! Whooping Crane Stronghold!” Of course, I had to ask what that meant. The volunteer on duty was very cordial and chuckled, “You’re not from here, are you?” I knew of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and that it was a haven for birds, but had no idea how important this facility was.
Four hundred species of birds, beautiful views of wetlands and San Antonio Bay, and home to the endangered whooping crane, that’s what you’ll find at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, and the perfect trail to take it all in is the Heron Flats Loop. This 1.4-mile loop is the longest in the park and gives you a good overview of what makes Aransas so special."
