Pine Canyon has been designated a Research Natural Area by the Federal Committee on Ecological Reserves. The idea behind this designation is to preserve areas by keeping them free from excessive human impact, such as camping, in order to monitor changes in the natural environment. Pine Canyon is a good choice for this program. Much of the historic anecdotal references to Pine Canyon sound like observations that can still be made today.
