Named after W. Goodrich Jones, the founder of the Texas Forestry Association, the W. Goodrich Jones State Forest was purchased by the state in 1926. The 1,733-acre forest operates as a demonstration and working forest. The park includes nature trails, two small fishing ponds, picnic areas, and parking for horse trailers. There are service roads and horse trails that run throughout the park: stay on the marked trail so as not to get lost; don’t take shortcuts, as these may cause erosion. The Middle Lake Trail, although short, is one of the few places in the Houston area where you might get a glimpse of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
