South Padre is not to be confused with Padre Island National Seashore,a national park unit of miles of unspoiled beach, located four hours north by road (and not accessible via the island itself). South Padre is lined with hotels, condominiums, and restaurants catering to beach lovers, yet this unlikely setting has something to offer birders, especially in spring migration. You can start birding as soon as the Texas Highway 100 causeway reaches the island. A paved walkway curves under the bridge, offering the chance to scan the muddy shore for waders, shorebirds, gulls, and terns.

I mistook this for a road bike trail. Unfortunately it was quite a bumpy ride and only did 7 miles before giving up. Nice ride with a mountain bike.
