Brazos Bend State Park: 40-Acre Lake Loop Trail/Elm Lake Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Brazos Bend State Park has more than 22 miles of hiking trails within its roughly 5,000 acres. It is one of the best camping and day-use parks in the area and is less than an hour from Houston. The 40-Acre Lake Loop Trail and the Elm Lake Loop Trail are located in the southwest section of the park, with the majority of the park stretching to the east and north.

The trails are on elevated crushed-granite walkways, which get you as close to the wildlife as possible while still being at a safe distance. If you are interested in birds, more than 290 species have been sighted here. A nature center near the center of the park houses exhibits that pertain to the major ecosystems (marshes and woodlands) in the park. The center is free and open on weekends and most holidays 9 a.m.–5 p.m."

"This hike combines loops around two of the park’s lakes for a scenic route that practically guarantees alligator sightings. This rock and caliche trail leads into wooded bottomland of sprawling oaks, snarly brush, and palmettos along the deep slough, passing a lot of moss-covered fallen trees and logs that dogs will want to sniff.

The hike then continues around to the right of 40-Acre Lake, where you will see and hear a plethora of ducks, egrets, herons, and other birds and may spot the occasional gator. The route passes a turnoff to Hoot’s Hollow Trail, then the Prairie Trail, and crosses a parking lot, where there are restrooms, water, and a picnic area."

This was not the most challenging hike. This part of Texas is flat, and the trail was white rock. Still, I really enjoyed it. Great opportunities for photos of birds, alligators, and snakes. There is a severe drought that was very noticeable, so hopefully there will be a good fall rain.
