"About 65 miles north of Houston. An easy to moderate day hike through the woods along Big Creek. Special Attractions: Lush forest, creek, large magnolias. This hike traverses a particularly scenic stretch of the 140-mile Lone Star Trail. The hike starts at the attractive Double Lake Campground and recreation area. The developed campground makes a good overnight spot before or after your hike. The trail follows the Double Lake Branch of Big Creek all the way downstream to the Big Creek Scenic Area. The route passes through lush woods of mixed pines and hardwoods. Several bridges ease crossings of creeks and ravines. As with all of the Lone Star Trail, the route is marked by aluminum rectangles posted on trees."

"For a chance to see many of the typical birds of the eastern Texas Piney Woods/Big Thicket region, you could hardly do better than to take a short (or longer) hike along the trails at this beautiful spot located just a few minutes off U.S. Highway 59. A specially designated area within the Sam Houston National Forest, Big Creek encompasses 1,460 acres of meandering creeks, lush pine-hardwood forest, and varied flora and fauna."
