Windmill Nature Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Windmills are the desert’s handmaidens. In the badlands of Texas, where nature cobbles together a landscape of bald limestone hummocks, prickly pear cactus, and abrupt knife-edged drops into stone canyons, windmills are often the only hope of survival for any living creature not completely adapted to arid ways.

The countryside wasn’t always so harsh. Cool temperatures and lush vegetation, as well as an abundance of funky wildlife including extinct species of camels and elephants, once dominated the region. Then substantial climatic change occurred over the course of several thousand years to create a more arid environment. But the most dramatic change has been far more recent. Just over two centuries ago, the rolling limestone hikers see as they scan the lumpy horizon was once vast grasslands dotted with shady mottes of oak and juniper."
