From the Hale Lake parking lot, head to your right toward a trail opening in the trees. This trail is part of the Bluestem Trail that runs parallel to the park road. The vegetation on both sides of the trail is thick, but you can easily see the road on your right. The dirt trail, which winds through the woods for 0.5 miles, ends at the park road and a bridge over Big Creek. At the bridge, go left at the trailhead sign to get on the Hale Lake Loop Trail. The trail heads downhill and past a bench on the right. Big Creek is flowing on your right, just past the bench and down a steep incline. Pass by a sign alerting you to the presence of alligators and warning you to keep a safe distance. The vegetation on the right is thick and very close to the trail; however, there is a 15-to-20 yard open area between the trail and the thick vegetation on the left.
