On the way to better-known (and, often, more accessible)sites along Texas Highway 87, it can be worthwhile to visit the Texas Point area of Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge. Cuckoos, flycatchers, vireos, thrushes, warblers, tanagers, buntings, andorioles can teem in the trees here, or the woods can be fairly quiet when winds and migration patterns conspire against birders. If possible, try to visit Sabine Woods (and other coastal spring migration spots) soon after a storm or passage of a front with northerly winds. Birds may well show up in late morning or afternoon; at times a silent woodland can be transformed into a busy place in a matter of minutes, when northbound birds start dropping from the sky on a schedule that’s only theirs.
