Dog Canyon Professional Review and Guide
"There is no formal trail to Dog Canyon; however, it is an easy route to follow. The walk to the canyon can be traversed via one of two routes—by line of sight along a fairly well-worn social path across the desert flats or by entering Bone Spring/Nine Point Draw and following the dry arroyo downstream. This description traces the line-of- sight route across the desert."
--Laurence Parent, Hiking Big Bend National Park (Falcon Guides).
This is one of the best trails in the park! It is unlikely you will encounter other hikers (solitude) and, it seems, there is always a new adventure on this hike - lots of stuff to 'discover' in the immediate vicinity. Happy Hiking!
This was a pleasant hike. The trip to the canyon area is pretty much a flat hike with cactus creating the only obstacles. Once you reach the mouth of the canyon the scenery takes on a drastic change. The rock formations are fairly standard for the canyons in the region, but picturesque none-the-less.
I hiked a good way into the canyon while my wife rested up front. The ground is clear and rocky making it a easy walk. If you haven't made this trip, I certainly recomend it for a short hike. Exploring the canyon is worth the efw hours it will take out of your day.
