Santa Margarita Ranch is a large, privately owned tract of mesquite and prickly pear brush and riparian vegetation along the Rio Grande upstream from Roma, and it is a longtime favorite Valley birding location. Reaching it and exploring it can be just slightly more adventurous than is the case at most other local sites, but a visit here is often a highly rewarding experience. This is not a spot for people who have difficulty walking, since it involves a moderate hike over uneven dirt roads. The owners require birders to pay a fee to enter their property, and it’s money well spent.
