Riviera (pronounced riv-air-ah) Beach is located at the mouth of Laguna Salada on Baffin Bay, a primary bay off Laguna Madre, west of Padre Island. This area can be pleasant in winter but extremely hot and humid in summer. Kaufer-Hubert Memorial Park includes an RV resort as well as a bird observation tower, picnic shelters, boat ramp, lighted fishing pier, and other recreational facilities. Located at the edge of Cayo del Grullo, this site offers easy access to good birding. Key birds: American White and Brown Pelicans, Neotropic Cormorant, Reddish Egret, White and White-faced Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Fulvous and Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks, Mottled Duck, Harris’s Hawk, Whitetailed Hawk, Crested Caracara, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Great Kiskadee, Green Jay, Long-billed Thrasher, and Olive Sparrow are present year-round. Magnificent Frigatebird; Least Bittern; Wood Stork; Wilson’s Plover; Gull-billed, Sandwich, Least, and Black Terns; Lesser Nighthawk; Brown-crested and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers; Painted Bunting; and Dickcissel occur in summer. American Bittern; Osprey; Peregrine Falcon; Sandhill Crane; Snowy and Piping Plovers; and American and Sprague’s Pipits can usually be found in winter.
