Quitaque is a tiny town that sits along a scenic escarpment that divides the plains through this part of west Texas. Caprock Canyons State Park is north of town, a great place for lovers of the outdoors to visit and explore. In 1993, the first segment of the largest rail-to-trail conversion in Texas was opened to the public here. The Caprock Canyons Trailway now extends 64 miles through the Texas Panhandle, with Quitaque at the center. The trailway is a multi-use trail for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding along an abandoned railroad right-of-way. It features a 1,000 foot tunnel, but with its rough, unpaved surface the trailway is not recommended for road bikes. The area has plenty of paved roads to cycle, though, and is worth a visit with either a mountain bike or a road bike. Terrain: very steep-but short-grades through the canyon. Road: quiet and isolated park road; little traffic on roads through Quitaque.
