The Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail straddles a ridgeline between the South and North Prongs of the Little Red River, providing views into both canyon drainages and beyond. After a brief but steep series of switchbacks, either from the east via the Canyon Loop Trail or west from the Upper Canyon Trail, Haynes Ridge offers almost 2 miles of flat, grassland hiking with 360-degree views of the Caprock landscape. Carry a good pair of binoculars in your pack for this trail, as the elevation and clear view of the prairies and plains below make bison spotting possible. Caprock Canyons State Park harbors the official Texas State Bison Herd, over fifty buffalo representing the last genetic remnants of the enormous population that once roamed the Southern Plains.
