Ranching in Big Bend country was an important and historic component of the expansion into Texas’s western frontier. However, the ranching history of west Texas favors the Anglo pioneer as its representative icon of Big Bend livestock raising, when in reality, Mexicans had already been here before Anglos tending livestock herds. It was the influx of Anglo agribusiness, with its enormous herds, purchasing of vast acreage, large populations of working cowboys, and sprawling ranch quarters that gave the humble Big Bend ranching history its cinematic grandeur. Unfortunately, it also left the most permanent, and devastating, marks on the land.
